PhD Admissions
Visiting Campus
We encourage you to visit any business school that you would seriously consider attending in order to
get a better feel for it. If you plan to visit Stanford, please email
us.
2007 LGBT Admissions Info Sessions
In past years, we have partnered with HBS and Kellogg to host evenings specially designed for LGBT prospective
students in San Francisco and New York City. These events have provided
prospective students with an opportunity to
speak with current LGBT students, alums, and admissions representatives
from all three schools. Dates for events during the fall of 2007
have not yet been confirmed, but will be posted here when available.
Admitted Students
If you have been admitted to the GSB, congratulations! We strongly encourage you to attend
Admit Weekend.
Please email us before your admit weekend. We will help
put you in touch with other LGBT admits (if you so desire) and we will invite you to an O4B event (usually
dinner or cocktails) during the admit weekend. Confidentiality is guaranteed if you request it in your
communications.
Questions About Admissions
Q: Should I be out in my application essays?
A: If you are comfortable with that degree of "outness." O4B's current membership was largely out in their essays, although to varying degrees. It is our firm student OPINION that being out in our admission essays was a plus and not a minus.
Q: Will I be irrevocably out once I've sent in such an essay?
A: No. The admissions office respects the confidentiality of such disclosures. Even other administrative departments do not receive this information on an individual basis. In other words, you will not be outed because you were out in your essays.
Q: Will being out affect my fellowship offer?
A: Not than any of us can imagine. On the other hand, there is a small fund of money available to attract "diversity" to the school, which has on occasion increased the fellowship offers of gay and lesbian students, as well as students from many other groups.
Q: How many people are in Out4Biz?
A: Historically, there are usually more than twenty student members of Out4Biz, though this number fluctuates
from class to class. There is an active alumni group for lesbians and gays, and they maintain a separate e-mail list, which includes many other names.
Q: What if I am not interested in being out at the Business School?
A: Despite our name, Out4Biz includes several members who are out to us but not out to the rest of the school. We are firmly committed to supporting all lesbian, gay and bisexual members of the GSB. For this reason, a policy of strict confidentiality is maintained at the Welcome BBQ every fall, and at the dinners which are held following each Admit Day.
Q: Who can I contact for more information?
A: Contact the current Out4Biz leadership by
email.
